Travel

Sankofa is an Ashanti word from Ghana- West Africa, which translates into "return and fetch it". It is symbolized by a mythical bird flying forward with its head looking backwards, while carrying an egg in its beak. It depicts the need for one to return to the past, learn or draw strength from it, in order to be able to truly embrace the future.

Azasou's Sankofa program has the following aspects:

  • Organising cultural development tours from Australia to West Africa. Please see tour dates for 2009 for more information
  • Financially assisting 1st generation New and Emerging Community members in Australia to travel to re-unite with their families in their original homeland and to be able to have some closure. We strongly believe that this closure enables New and Emerging Australians to better settle into Australia and to better embrace their new world. This aspect of Sankofa will commence at the end of 2009.
  • Coordinating cultural experience placement (CEP) programs for Post Graduate humanities students. This program is tailored to suit students from Australia who wish to experience the African culture as part of their learning journey.

Azasou also works closely with its brother company Kazuri Realty in Ghana to assist people wishing to organize self-tours throughout Ghana. The company has several self-contained houses and apartments in the various regions in Ghana where guests are able to stay at reasonable costs.
